The ethos behind TVision Technology has always been to provide quality finance and ERP software solutions to our clients. To do this, TVision chose from the start to focus exclusively on Microsoft Dynamics NAV - Dynamics NAV because we believe it is the best mid range solution available - and exclusively because that way we can make sure our software engineers are experts in the product, its functionality and implementation. We would never have been content as Jacks of all trades and Masters of none.
TVision Technology was founded in 1999 with the sole ambition to deliver a quality finance and ERP solution. The founders, Richard Thompson, Pippa Grant and Robert de Bath, wanted to establish a company that would gain a reputation for working in true partnership with clients, providing added value to the process of implementing Finance and ERP systems.
The three directors had worked together under Thompson Associates, providing independent consultancy, technical and project management services. Through this experience they learnt the challenges and stresses of implementations. The idea for TVision was to provide an exemplary service.
The first task was to select the software offering to build the company on. Whilst working on an SAP implementation for a large house builder, Richard Thompson came across Navision (now Microsoft Dynamics NAV):
“The German SAP partner also worked with Navision. I asked them what it was and they replied it was the flexible, mid-market solution they worked with when SAP R3 was overkill,” explains Richard. “Rob and I had looked at a number of mid-market products for TVision but were yet to be impressed; one demonstration of Navision changed that!”
Navision was chosen for three key reasons:
Functionality as standard is very important. Especially in the UK where “out of the box” is a favoured expression and “bespoke” often frowned upon. It also meant that TVision had a solution that could be delivered from day one.
User-interface is a crucial element for project success. The fact that Navision used Windows protocols meant that many users are half-way trained before they even see the product. Navision’s flexibility means that fields can be removed or renamed as appropriate for the user; no need to train on what not to do!
Residing in its own development environment is important for two reasons. Firstly, it means that the source code is loaded on the client’s server so no need for ESCROW agreements and no lock in to any one support partner. Secondly, and crucially, it means that we at TVision can make changes if required. This may seem to contradict the argument for standard software, the point is standard software will only ever provide a partial fit. You’ll choose the product that gives the highest degree of fit and work out how to manage the gap. Often companies will claim that they will change processes rather than software; however, the reality is that in order to maintain your competitive edge, it’s much better to make a small change in the software. Because NAV is meant to be changed, you can do so safe in the knowledge that you can still easily upgrade or change partners if necessary.
Why did we think the ability to change partners would be an important consideration? We want our clients to work with us because they want to, not because they feel they have to.
Over ten years on, TVision continues to work solely with what is now called Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Our quest for excellence means we have survived two recessions debt-free and maintained our Microsoft Gold Partner accreditation to become one of the very few pure NAV Microsoft Gold Partners in the UK.
