Bespoke tends to be a taboo word for UK IT projects. It evokes memories of uncontrolled development, systems that cannot be upgraded and uncomfortable reliance on one or two key people capable of supporting the system. These bad associations that can result from a poorly designed or implemented solution shouldn't be allowed to mask the very real positives. A bespoke solution will precisely match your business needs.
Correctly implemented, Microsoft Dynamics NAV is the only mid-market solution that can provide all the benefits of bespoke with none of the negatives. It can offer the unique combination of a bespoke solution built on standard, open source software, regularly updated and with a strong partner community to support it.
Unlike other ERP solutions, Dynamics NAV was designed within its own development environment to support further customisation by partners and end users (you do need the correct licence). Add-ons for NAV are written in the same language and all additional code adds to the solution rather than sits alongside it. Hence in NAV there are no modules or need for interfaces between areas of the software (although you will sometimes hear NAV functionality referred to rather lazily in terms of modules when it is really an integral part to the solution).
One fear with customisation can be that you will be left behind with an 'old' version. The upgrade tool kit helps manage the process of upgrading customisations to the latest versions. We always like to be completely open with our clients and it must be said that where significant development has been taken place, then upgrades will mean some additional work beyond that for a standard implementation. The tool kit helps manage the upgrade. If upgrading a lot of development is a daunting task, an executables-only upgrade is an option to continue on a supported platform until the time is right for a full upgrade.
A bold statement! All of the core financials exist as standard so you’re not paying a partner to develop multi-currency or VAT return functionality. All the technical features are there such as integration to Excel, Word and Office and ability to leverage SQL tools, Share Point and web services.
Standard functionality exists for your operational needs, stock management, projects, manufacturing etc. The 20% will be the development to embrace the processes that make you unique.
A key concern in choosing a bespoke solution (second only after concerns about upgrades) is what happens if the developer gets run over by a (hypothetical!) bus? This is not an issue for Dynamics NAV users as there is a strong community of NAV partners and professionals all happy to provide continued support. If required, Microsoft can provide interim support and assistance in finding a new partner.
