CORRECTION FROM JET REPORTS:
“Thank you for an interesting blog! I would like to correct information that you have on the blog post. Zetadocs Express requires Office 365, but there is no such requirement for Jet Express. Jet Express runs quite nicely on on-premise Excel.

We appreciate and value your support of Jet Reports. We have just released our new blog. https://blogs.jetreports.com if you would like the latest info on our products.”

Apologies for the confusion, this was my mistaken belief at the time of writing, since rectified in more recent blogs but neglected to revise this one. Nicki September 2011

This week I have been catching up on the latest news. I’m a bit behind after the maternity leave; luckily Microsoft is still ahead of me, this is all stuff that will be released to market autumn 2011. And it is exciting stuff, all to do with Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Office 365 and encouraging users to jump into the Cloud.

So how is Microsoft encouraging NAV users to go to the Cloud? By bundling Jet Express and Zetadocs Express with the latest version of NAV. Great, but, you can only make use of Jet Express and Zetadocs Express if you use Office 365 with SharePoint. Is this win/win? Well why not? Consuming Office via the Cloud has lots of benefits. The big stumbling block for many is the feeling of “where’s my data?” I’ve blogged previously on the double-headed anxiety that stands in the way of Cloud (or SaaS) consumption; concerns about security, concerns about where the data is. Logically most of us know these are unfounded, emotionally we’re just not ready to make that commitment.

I picked up my Windows Mobile 7 phone. It has Office 365. The comment from a technical friend: you can avoid the need for a Cloud account by emailing documents to yourself then saving them on a hard drive. I think I shall let reason rule and get a Cloud account.

Using Office 365 should not be seen as the price paid for great reporting and document management tools offered with a great ERP solution. This should be seen as win / win / win.
