Directions EMEA, the event for all things Microsoft Dynamics NAV opened today and TVision Technology were in force to ensure that we keep abreast of promotions, technology and the allusive NAV 2013 R2 (code name “Sicily”).

The day started rather damply, with nothing to do with the weather. An airport strike in Copenhagen left some 90 key speakers stranded. As I write this they are on a bus headed to Vienna. The lack was felt in cancelled / rescheduled sessions and the discouragement of organisers being forced into presentation mode which definitely seemed outside of their comfort zone.

Things improved with the professional, polished presentation skills of Paul White, Microsoft lead for Dynamics NAV globally and experienced presenter. Paul was keen to reassure the world that Microsoft is absolutely committed to NAV. Mention of even tighter integration with Outlook, Cloud compatibility that “surpasses products born in the cloud” and on-going R&D investment from Microsoft gave the clear message that NAV, more popular than all the other Dynamics ERP products combined, remains a central point of Microsoft’s growth strategy.

Product improvements were mentioned with improved cash management for NAV 2013 R2. We expect to hear more over the next two days of the conference.

Pricing and promotions was the most lively and well-received event. Two key promotions, one for new clients and one for new and existing users of NAV 2013 were announced.

“Give Me Five” was reminiscence of a previous Microsoft promotion (they clearly like the metaphor!); this time it offers a five full user solution for the price of a single user (based on starter pack functionality). Valid until Christmas Eve 2013, it really could be Santa comes early for qualifying users.

“Extend for Half” recognises that not every NAV user’s needs are met by the Standard Pack. “Extend for Half” is available for new and existing users looking to add the Extended Pack to their solution. It offers a 50% discount.

One Microsoft employee attending the event explained that the promotions were in response to market expectations and competitive pricing. Users expect licence costs to be very low, whilst happy to invest in value add where required. This is the return we all expected on the volume basis that Microsoft is aiming for.

Further announcements on the SaaS and Cloud pricing expected tomorrow.
