At the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference last week the official announcement was made of the launch of Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016, version 9, code named Corfu.

There were no real surprises. Microsoft’s track record of delivering to planned release dates has been consistently reliable for the last three NAV releases. NAV is now on a platform that was re-engineered in version 6 to provide future-proofing for the coming generations of mobile, scalable and most importantly, usable solutions. This has made it easier for Microsoft to roll out new versions that provide step changes and improvements.

In Dynamics NAV 2016, the main enhancements are around workflow, document management / OCR and even greater e-services integration.

So should you be worrying about forced frequent upgrades? No. Microsoft may have accelerated version release; they are still committed to the stated 10 years support for each version (5 years mainstream support plus 5 years extended). Microsoft’s published product life-cycle provides greater insight into version futures than any other software provider. Microsoft’s network of partners ensures there is always someone who can advise on your version.

So should you be planning an upgrade? If you are on version 6 (Dynamics NAV 2009) or prior versions then definitely yes. Three core reasons:

1. You’re running your business on software that is no longer supported or reaching retirement
2. Bite the bullet! If you are on an earlier version then this upgrade may well be tough; it will also be the last tough upgrade as you will
be enjoying a version that has vastly improved upgrade tools.
3. You don’t know what you’re missing! If you haven’t seen latest versions then you are holding back your users and your business from greater productivity.
