Improving user performance in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central can significantly enhance productivity and user experience. Here are some tips and tricks to help you optimise the system for better Business Central user performance.

Improving overall system performance of Business Central

1. Browser choice

Use a modern and performance-optimised browser like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge for the best user experience. Older browsers like Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge Legacy are not supported.

    2. Browser optimisation

Since Business Central is web-based, it is important to optimise the browser. Make sure that you clear your cache regularly, update the browser to the latest version, and close unnecessary tabs.

    3. Pre-schedule reports

To help keep your Business Central instance running smoothly during peak times, try to schedule reports to run during off-peak hours rather than generating them in real-time.

    4. Streamline data entry

When uploading large data sets, make use of RapidStart services, rather than manually entering data. Also minimise the need for repetitive tasks by using data templates for recurring transactions such as invoices or journal entries.

    5. Efficient data management

You can also reduce Business Central load times, by removing or archiving old data that is no longer needed. This can apply to obsolete orders, reports or historical transactions.

    6. Avoid overloaded extensions

Too many extensions on your Business Central system can slow it down. Make sure you regularly audit the extensions on your system and remove or disable any that are no longer necessary.

    7. Optimise workflows

A perfect way to streamline processes is to set up automated approval workflows. These will reduce the need for manual intervention and will accelerate tasks such as invoice approvals. You can integrate Power Automate with your Business Central system to streamline repetitive tasks such as data import, approvals and notifications.

    8. Monitor and optimise background jobs

Save resource-heavy background tasks, such as financial consolidation, for out-of-hours. Regularly monitor background jobs for any performance issues or failures. This will allow you to adjust schedules if necessary.

    9. Limit data synchronisation

If your Business Central system is integrated with any other system, make sure that your data synchronisation settings are optimised to avoid any performance lags. As much as possible, synchronise only essential data at scheduled intervals.

Improving individual user performance of Business Central

    10. Global Search (Tell Me)

Make use of the “Tell what you want to do” search bar. It is a quick and easy way to access to pages, reports and actions.

      11. Filters and lists

When looking for specific information from within a list, you can improve data retrieval speeds by using column filters. A good understanding of how to search, filter and sort lists effectively will help you to quickly find and analyse the data you are looking for.

        12. Keyboard shortcuts

Business Central also includes a wide range of keyboard shortcuts that will make it easier for users to navigate to different areas and elements on a page. Details of all these shortcuts can be found here.

          13. Optimise page layout

Users can easily customise page layouts and reduce data retrieval speeds by:

            • Using filters to: limit the number of records displayed on lists, or reports to only what’s necessary.
            • Removing unnecessary fields or columns on a page.
            • Using the “Show Filter Pane by Default” to toggle filters on/off.

            14. Manage attachments and files

Improve performance by managing which attachments and how files are stored in Business Central. You can reduce the size and quality of images you use, store files on external storage for previewing, and minimise the number of images and documents that you store in Business Central.

              15. Utilise action bars

Microsoft introduced the modern action bar to Business Central in the 2022 wave 2 update, and have been making significant improvements to it ever since.  Familiarisng yourself with the actions available in list pages, documents and cards will help improve efficiency and productivity within Business Central.

                16. Train users on best practices

If your users understand the system’s capabilities and shortcuts, they can perform tasks more quickly and efficiently. Regular training sessions are therefore essential.

                  17. Document key processes

Make sure that you provide your users with documentation for frequently used processes to help reduce time spent on troubleshooting. TVision customers have access to a range of how-tos and guides in the TVision online support portal.

                    18. Access e-learning content
