Microsoft Dynamics is the collective name for Microsoft’s suite of business applications. The division was formed in 2002 when Microsoft acquired the Danish software company Navision a/s and merged this with the American company Great Plains, which had been acquired two years previously.
Currently supported products within the suite include:
Customer Relationship Management Solutions:
Enterprise Resource Planning Solutions:
Retail Management Solutions:
The ERP solutions were all acquired by Microsoft, CRM and RMS have been developed by Microsoft. Of the four ERP solutions, GP is aimed at the SME (small to medium enterprise) in Anglo-American markets; NAV is aimed at the core mid-market to Enterprise space. AX is aimed at complex Enterprise, typically distributed Manufacturing environments as a competitor to products such as Oracle and SAP R3. SL is more of a legacy product, aimed at companies involved in project based accounting, typically in advertising and marketing industries.
At the time that Microsoft acquired Great Plains and Navision, Navision was the dominant product in Europe with a small presence in North America and globally. GP was the dominant product in North America with a small presence in Europe, mostly UK companies with single currency requirements. Since the acquisition of Navision by Microsoft an interesting trend has been that NAV, with its Microsoft branding, began to outsell GP in North America.
NAV remains the most popular product in the ERP suite, it has more global presence with more country versions available (i.e. versions that support local fiscal requirements as standard), more companies use it, supporting more end-users, over one million users world-wide.
